The system was fully modeled using SDTlib to perform a frequency analysis of the system and optimize the controllers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"659\" src=\"https:\/\/dycsyt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sketch_spacecraft_LOS.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-553\" style=\"width:798px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dycsyt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sketch_spacecraft_LOS.png 1500w, https:\/\/dycsyt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sketch_spacecraft_LOS-1280x562.png 1280w, https:\/\/dycsyt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sketch_spacecraft_LOS-980x430.png 980w, https:\/\/dycsyt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/sketch_spacecraft_LOS-480x211.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) and (max-width: 1280px) 1280px, (min-width: 1281px) 1500px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The observation satellite and its representation with the SDTlib formalism<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous possible disturbances were considered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Flexible elements (solar panels, central body, and optical payload),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Solar panel mechanisms (SADM) source of microvibrations due to imperfections in the gearbox,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reaction wheels may exhibit unbalance, creating speed-dependent harmonic disturbances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The model obtained with SDTlib has enabled a detailed analysis of the frequency behavior, and in particular the propagation of microvibrations in the system. The following figure shows the transfer function between disturbances (microvibrations) and pointing error at the line of sight. Up to 100 rad\/s, the impact of reaction wheel disturbance is much greater than that of SADM (and, above 100 rad\/s, they are comparable). In particular, we see the impact of flexible modes between 1 and 10 rad\/s, which undergo a frequency and amplitude shift due to solar panel rotation and possible reaction wheel speeds; when the frequency of the reaction wheel harmonic disturbance coincides with a structural mode, pointing performance is degraded. However, the synthesis of a robust controller will mitigate this effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"577\" src=\"https:\/\/dycsyt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/disturbances_LOS.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-558\" style=\"width:642px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dycsyt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/disturbances_LOS.png 1500w, https:\/\/dycsyt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/disturbances_LOS-1280x492.png 1280w, https:\/\/dycsyt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/disturbances_LOS-980x377.png 980w, https:\/\/dycsyt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/disturbances_LOS-480x185.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) and (max-width: 1280px) 1280px, (min-width: 1281px) 1500px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To counter these disturbances, a three-stage architecture was studied:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attitude control (jet wheels, RWA),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Passive and active payload insulation<em>(proof-mass actuators, PMA<\/em>),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Fast-steering mirrors (FSM<\/em>),<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The following figure shows the transfer function between disturbances (microvibrations) and pointing error, progressively adding the various control stages: open loop, passive isolation, fine pointing (FSM), and active isolation (PMA). Passive isolation reduces high-frequency error (above 200 rad\/s), while introducing additional modes around 100 rad\/s (green curve vs. black curve). The introduction of active control with FSMs and PMAs further improves accuracy, reducing high-frequency error down to 100 milli-arcseconds and then 40 milli-arcseconds.
